The preparations for the FINA World Championships continue as the South African Swimming team claimed two gold, one silver and two bronze medals on the first day of the Mare Nostrum Canet leg tonight, Wednesday, 8th June 2011.
Cameron van der Burgh once again showed his skill in the 50m breaststroke race when he won the gold with a fast time of 27.72. It was a close race between the South African and Japan’s Ryo Tateishi who touched the wall in a time of 27.88 to take home the silver. Russia’s Aleksandr Triznov took the bronze in 28.05.
14 year old Michelle Weber (SA) bagged the 800m freestyle title, finishing over 5 seconds ahead of the pack. Weber’s time of 8:49.68 secured her first position in front of France’s Lara Grangeon in 8:55.45 and Denmark’s Nie Nielsen in 8:56.86.
In the 50m freestyle, Roland Schoeman finished with the silver medal in a time of 22.49 behind Australia’s Matthew Targett in 22.19. The bronze was shared between Russia’s Evgeny Lagunov and Australia’s Cameron Prosser when they both clocked 22.54.
Kathryn Meaklim was awarded a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley. Meaklim clocked 2:16.46 behind France’s Lara Grangeon in 2:14.52 and Sweden’s Ida Marko-Varga in 2:15.76. Bianca Meyer came in 7th with a time of 2:17.86.
South Africa’s second bronze medal came from Chad le Clos when he swam to a 52.91 in the 100m butterfly. Takuro Fujii from Japan walked away with the gold in 52.24 and Kaio Marcio Almeida from Brazil took the silver in 52.81
In other races tonight, Karin Prinsloo finished 8th in both the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke events in 26.06 and 1:02.38 respectively. Ronwyn Roper (2:31.17) and Jessica Liss (2:34.74) ended 5th and 8th in the 200m breaststroke, respectively.
Myles Brown ended in 4th place in the 400m freestyle with a time of 3:55.70, while Gerhard Zandberg (55.14) and Charl Crous (55.78) finished 5th and 6th in the 100m backstroke, respectively.
The Canet leg will conclude tomorrow following which the South African Swimming team will be heading for the final Mare Nostrum competition in Monaco on 11th and 12th of June.
