Thai Airways will withdraw from South Africa from mid-January 2015.
The last outbound flight will leave Johannesburg for Bangkok on January 14.
A spokesperson for the airline said a formal announcement was still pending.
This means that from mid-January there are no longer direct flights to Thailand. There are many non-direct options but it is a loss for South Africa.
Spokesperson for the Tourism Authority of Thailand in South Africa, Lesley Simpson, added: “It is not the demise of the destination.
There are other airlines that will fill the gap. Those flights might not be the most convenient but I still think it will work.”
Ms. Simpson estimated South Africa would send nearly 70,000 visitors to Thailand this year.
Thailand is still a fabulous destination for South Africans as it is good value for money.
