The organisers of the Robben Island Freedom swim have announced that one of South Africa’s most extreme swim’s will not be held in 2013 due to financial constraints.
The swim is traditionally held from Robben Island to Blouberg beach, a distance of 7.6 K in cold water. Solo swimmers are only allowed to wear a speedo type costume, goggles and a cap.
“The nature of the event and its constraints, number of swimmers and boats, requires a significant title sponsor to make it possible. Unfortunately we haven’t managed to secure a sponsor of this nature”, said Ram Barkai.
“Therefore, we are very sad to advise all that we are no longer looking to hold the Robben Island swimming event until such time that we can secure a significant sponsor and be 100% comfortable with the safety and the logistics of the event” added Barkai.
The good news for South Africa’s extreme swimmers is that a new Freedom swim will be held that will throw out enough challenges to keep even the most hard core swimmers happy.
A 9 K swim from Llandudno to Camps Bay will be held on 27 April 2013 with Realtor of Excellence being the event sponsor.
“This is a beautiful course along the 12 Apostles mountain ridge and swimmers will be close to shore the entire way. It is also spectator friendly and the swim will be current assisted with an awesome finish at Camps Bay” said Toni Enderli from Realtor of Excellence.
The swim will also cater for wetsuit swimmers as well as relay teams, with a mile and some shorter distance events taking place at Camps Bay to encourage entry level sea swimmers.
Entries will open on 15 February at www.freedomswimseries.co.za/
