Some of the legends of South African sport will form part of the WinterFest this July.
Oakley South Africa has announced that it will present the X-Over Challenge at the JBay Winterfest. This ‘cross-over’ challenge comprises a selection of top Oakley athletes competing in a multi-discipline event to crown an Oakley X-Over Champion 2014.
The event, to be held during the JBay Winterfest, will consist of a golf tournament, a mountain bike race and a surfing contest. Athletes will need to compete in all three disciplines to be in the running for the 2014 X-Over crown.
Oakley Sports Marketing Manager Seth Hulley has had this project in the mix for a while now, and saw his opportunity to bring it to the fore in partnership with the JBay Winterfest.
“I have wanted to do this event for a while,” said Hulley. “I’m pleased to be able to partner with the JBay Winterfest to bring this event to fruition. It’s going to be fun and exciting, and the Oakley athletes are pumped on the event.”
The event is set to run over two days – the 15th and 16th July – with a prize giving and closing function on the night of the 16th at the Jolly Dolphin in JBay.
The athletes confirmed for the X-Over Challenge thus far comprises Bob Skinstad, Butch James, Dale Steyn, David Miller, Greg Minnaar, John Smit, Jordy Smith, Kevin Evans, Ruan De Smidt, Ryan O’Connor and Ryan Sandes.
The golf tournament will take place at the Links Golf Course in St Francis, the mountain bike race will take place on the JBay Winterfest Track, and the surfing contest will take place at Lower Point in Jeffreys Bay.
Bobby Skinstad is one of the competing athletes who is very excited about the event. “This is going to be a blast,” said Skinstad, a keen golfer, surfer, and mountain biker. “It’s going to be so much fun competing against the boys on the track, the golf course and in the water. There are some seriously competitive guys in the mix, so may the best man win.”
Jordy Smith is the two times champion of the World Tour surfing event in JBay, and is keen for this event and stoked on having some fun at the Oakley X-Over event. “I love coming back to JBay whenever I can,” said Jordy on this year’s program. “I love it in JBay and the area has a special place in my heart. I’m stoked that the ASP World Tour is returning to JBay, and the Oakley X-Over event as a pre-event looks like it’s going to be so much fun, with a cool group of guys.”
The JBay Winterfest is set to take place from 10 – 20 July, and will comprise the Oakley X-Over, the JBay Open ASP World Tour surfing event, skate events, trail running, mountain biking, fishing, music, a VW rally, funduro, kite festival, open water swim events and much more.
