The swim season kicked into high gear the past weekend with the young swimmers from Jeffreys Bay competing in a C league gala in Port Elizabeth on Saturday and the older swimmers taking on the challenges presented by open water swimming in the Marina Martinique on Sunday.
Michelle Strydom had a great gala and won each of her four races with younger brother MC also putting in a good performance. Danre du Preez, Hayley Van Niekerk, Anneen Gerber all had a good gala as well. Aiden de Villiers showed just how tough he is by not being intimidated by the cold water and swam some solid races.
The JBay swimmers produced some excellent results in the Eastern Province Swim Challenge Series on Sunday. In near perfect conditions and 19 degree water, butterfly swimmer Brenton Williams completed the 10 K event in a time of 3 hours 39 minutes. The 10 K was won by Olympian Jessica Roux, with Rebecca Newman coming second.
40 swimmers took part in the 3 K swim, with Jeffreys Bay swimmer winning the ladies division in a time of 39:32. Daniel Jones (Port Elizabeth) won the mens division from his brother Wayne in a time of 38:46.
JBay veteran JC Van Wyk came second in his age group, with Seth de Swart and Rebecca Baard winning the 12- 13 yr age group.
Legendary South African surfer Mark Paarman won the 1 K wetsuit race with Anne de Swart taking the honours in the womens 40 -49 yr age group.
Isabeau Joubert came 3rd in the 40 – 49 yr age group despite swimming butterfly the whole way. This is the first time ever in the Eastern Cape and probably in South Africa that a woman has swam 1 K fly in open water.
The next swim in Jeffreys Bay takes place on 2 December at Marina Martinique.
