Beaches have been closed following a fatal shark attack on a surfer in Western Australia today.
The surfer, believed to be in his 20’s was surfing alone at the time at Umbies. According to reports he was missing an arm and had flesh wounds on his right leg.
The species of shark responsible for the attack has not yet been verified, although there is a fair amount of Great White activity in the area. The water was described as being very clear with good visibility.
The death is Gracetown’s third shark attack fatality in the past 10 years.
The Department of Fisheries has issued a threat warning and has closed a number of local beaches, from Umbies, to South Point and Huzzas.
North Point and the main Gracetown beach have also been closed. The initial beach closures will be in place for 24 hours.
