The 2010/11 Open Water Swim season kicks off on Sunday 3 October with an event at Marina Martinique.
The first of 5 events in the EP Open Water Swim Series will take place from the LaCaribe flats in Phase 2 of the Marina. Kouga Express and jbaynews.com are the print and online media sponsors of Series as well as the Steers Marina Mile which will take place on 23 December 2010.
Following the introduction of the 10 Km swim at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the sport is enjoying massive growth world wide at present with over 3 000 events taking place in warm and cold water.
Coach of the Kouga Swim Club (who are hosting the Series) Brenton Williams says that due to the winds experienced lately, the Marina canals are still cold and open water training has yet to start in Jeffreys Bay.
“Most of our junior swimmers will be participating in the 500m swim to get back into the swing of things and we will be looking at moving them up to the 1 K in the event on 31 October” said Williams.
The following swim will take place on Sunday:
5Km, 3Km, 1Km, 500m and bank to bank.
Jessica Roux, who dominated the women’s division at last year’s Series has just returned from Morocco where she won the 5 Km swim at the African Games. Roux will be looking forward to a big season in her quest to make the South African team to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games.
