Full programme for JBay Winterfest

The worlds best surfers as well as South Africa’s iconic athletes, mountain bike enthusiasts, trail runners, avid fishermen and cold water swim junkies headline this year’s JBay WinterFest.

Now in its fourth year, the annual JBay Winterfest sponsored by Woodlands Dairy, will take over Jeffreys Bay and surrounding areas from July 6 to 17.

The exciting line-up, boasting a new look and feel, taps into the festival mood with some bold new events on the calendar, as well as refreshingly different formats for some existing events.

JBay Open of Surfing: July 6 – 17

The JBay Open is the anchor event of the JBay WinterFest, bringing the world’s best surfers to town, such as Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning.

Local support will lie with Steven Sawyer from Jeffreys Bay, the wildcard winner of the JBU Supertrail earlier this month, as well as South African Jordy Smith who won two titles in Jeffreys Bay back in 2010 and 2011.

Winter Music Festival: July 8 – 16

The fifth annual Winter Music Festival, set to blow music lovers away, will take place at Jolly Dolphin from July 8 to July 16 – amplifying the festival to a whole new note.

Timo ODV and PHFAT will kick off the music festivities on July 8, followed by Jack Parrow on July 9.

The Oakley X-Over prize-giving and auction will take to the stage on July 14. Cut Snake and Strange Loving will furthermore entertain festival-goers on this day.

Locnville will get the party rocking on July 15, while Sketchy Bongo will cause some foot stomping craziness on July 16.

Quiksilver Jnr Pro/ Roxy Jnr Pro: July 8 – 10

New on the menu is the Quiksilver Junior Pro and the Roxy Junior Pro at Magnatubes from July 8 to 10. The event caters for surfers in the u.18, u.16 and u.12 divisions.

Oakley X-Over: July 13 – 14

The Oakley X-Over will see iconic athletes like Jordy Smith, John Smit, Ryan Sandes, Garreth ‘Soldierboy’ McLellan, Bob Skinstad, Greg Minnaar, Gugu Zulu, Schalk Burger, Giniel De Villiers, Seabelo Senatla, Nick De Wit and Jean De Villiers compete in a unique cross-over event featuring mountain-biking, surfing and golf.

The Oakley X-Over will take place at the Link Golf Course, Lower Point in Jeffreys Bay, and Fountains Mall from July 13 – 14.

Lumo Kiddies’ Events: July 15

Enjoy a night of fun with friends and family at the Kabeljous Hub from 17:00 on July 15 with glow in the dark obstacles, some spice and everything nice.

Kite Festival: July 15 – 17

Kite-festivities will kick off on July 15 with a lumo kite display, sporting large kites with lights and lumo glowing in the sky. This will form part of the kiddies’ lumo night at the Kabeljouws Hub.

July 16 will see various kites on display throughout the day, interjected with “sweety drops” and stunt kite displays. The first ever WinterFest Kite Competition will take place at 10:00 on July 17.

Mountain Bike Classic: July 16

After two years of funding, the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm is now the official title sponsor for the JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic.

There will be three routes, offering something for all skill and fitness levels – a 25km fun ride, 50km half-marathon and 85km ultra. The longer routes will take in the spectacular trails of Impala Ranch.

Riders taking part in all three routes will be racing through the wind farm, riding along roads that are interspersed by 80m tall wind turbine towers, spread more than 500m apart.

Cold Water Swim Classic: July 16

The Cold Water Classic, presented by Nicholas Melck Properties will be held at Marina Martinique from 09:30 on July 16, and swimmers can test themselves by swimming a mile, double mile or triple mile in ±12°C water.

Only pre-entries will be accepted for the Cold Water Classic. Registrations are open and no late entries will be allowed for safety reasons.

Skins Fishing Competition: July 16 – 17

The Fishing Skins and Catch a Nissan competitions will take place at Kabeljouws on July 16 and 17.

The competition will kick off on the Saturday when anglers with the biggest fish can win R3 500 an hour from 07:30 to 12:30 – R17 500 in total.

An exciting edition to the fishing competition is the Catch a Nissan Competition from 07:30 to 12:30 on July 17.

In contrast with the Skins Competition, this competition is an edible competition only and fish are measured.

JBay X-Trail Run: July 16 – 17

The JBay X-Trail Run is unique in concept, entailing three individual 20km trail runs, all starting 12-hours apart. The total distance covered will be just over 60km and will surely test the ‘mettle’ and endurance of all participants. All three events will start and finish at Impala Ranch.

A 5km ‘Fun’ Night Trail Run/ Walk will be presented at 19:30 on July 16, as well as a slightly more challenging 10km trail Run at 07:20 on July 17. Both these events will be suitable for families, friends, supporters and first time trail runners.
