As promised last year, Oakley South Africa is set to return to JBay with a bigger and better X Over event – a celebrity cross over tournament – with an entry list that reads like a who’s who of sports celebrities in the country.
The Oakley X Over presented by Seartec is a multi-disciplined cross over challenge where top South African athletes from various sporting codes are invited to battle it out for the champion title.
The Oakley X Over consists of a golf tournament, a mountain bike race and a surfing contest, and will take place on 13-14 July. It will form part of the JBay Winterfest, which runs from 6-17 July in Jeffreys Bay and environs.
The Oakley X Over will begin with the golf tournament on the morning of 13 July at The Links Golf Course at St Francis Bay. This will be followed by the Mountain Bike race in JBay on the same day.
The surfing contest will happen at the Lower Point in JBay, starting in the morning on the 14 July.
“With two successful Oakley X Over events behind us, and with the bar set high over the last two years, I’m looking forward to another successful event this year,” said Oakley Sports Marketing and Events Manager Seth Hulley.
“This year we have added six new iconic athletes into the mix, being Gugu Zulu, Schalk Burger, Giniel De Villiers, Seabelo Senatla, Nick De Wit and Jean De Villiers, and have secured our own show on Supersport, so the public will get to witness their sports heroes pushing their limits in the various sporting categories. Certainly an event not to be missed!”
Jean de Villiers is a new face at the event, and is excited to be involved.
“I’m thrilled to be part of Oakley X Over 2016,” said de Villiers. “It’s great to be associated with such an amazing brand like Oakley and to be in the presence of such fantastic athletes will be a memorable occasion. I’m sure there will be no lack of competitiveness and lots of fun and banter. Can’t wait.”
Apart from the new faces, the Oakley X Over has a number of competitors who have been at the event since inception, and who now consider themselves veterans at this tough but fun event.
Athletes like Jordy Smith, John Smit, Ryan Sandes, Garreth ‘Soldierboy’ McLellan, Bob Skinstad and Greg Minnaar will be back, all keen on a win at this prestigious tournament. Minnaar, a multiple Downhill Mountain Bike World Champion, is dead-set on a 2016 victory.
“This year I’m coming in hot and loose,” said Minnaar on his pre-event training regime. “I think in years past I’ve taken this event way too seriously and ended up cracking under pressure, especially in the golf. This year I’ve worked hard on getting my mental game figured out, and getting into the zone! The 2016 Oakley X Over will be mine!”
The JBay Winterfest presented by Woodlands Dairy is set to take place from 8-19 July, and will comprise the Oakley X Over, the JBay Open WSL Championship Tour surfing event, The Quiksilver Junior surfing events, extreme trail running, mountain biking, fishing, music, a kite festival, open water swim events and much more.
