SARU must show leadership in EP Kings liquidation saga

The DA has called on the South African Rugby Union (SARU) to intervene by placing the EP Kings under administration for the purpose of ensuring the sustainability and longevity of the EP Kings.

Development of rugby in South Africa can ill-afford to be compromised due to the financial machinations of EP Kings management.
The Eastern Province Rugby (PTY) LTD, the professional arm of the EP Kings, has been provisionally liquidated.
The company will now be placed under provisional liquidation, a liquidator will be appointed to oversee the process and EP Rugby will have until 10 May 2016 to address the current financial challenges.
This came after the union was taken to court by 36 EP Kings players who are owed millions in unpaid salaries. This development will have dire consequences for the union in attracting future players and sponsors, and constitutes a big blow to the transformation of the sport in our country.
“In July last year the DA wrote to the CEO of SARU, Jurie Roux, to request that they send a team to the Eastern Cape to investigate and assess if the franchise needs to be placed under administration, said Darren Bergman of the Democratic Alliance.
We will petition SARU to take over full administration of the union, as it has done for the Super Rugby union the Southern Kings, for the benefit of the future of its players and staff.
It is distressing to see players’ careers gambled with by politics on and off the field. It is high time those responsible for recklessness and mismanagement be given the red card and that SARU display leadership and step in for the sake a rugby development in the Eastern Cape,” added Bergman.
