Big wave surfer injured in horrific wipe out

Garrett McNamara is familiar with big-wave risks. The Hawaiian charger still holds the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed.

But while surfing Maverick’s on Thursday, January 7, McNamara was relying on pure paddle power alone to get down the face of some heavy monsters.

As the KTVU news reel footage shows, McNamara suffered a horrific wipeout. After getting hung up on takeoff, he tried to airdrop down the face.

When that effort failed, his next goal was to penetrate the surface in order to get deep and let the wave pass. But that failed too.

Instead, McNamara skipped like a stone down the face, limbs flying, until the worst part of his punishment came: The thick Maverick’s lip came down and pulverized him. It doesn’t get much worse than that.

There are early reports that McNamara suffered a shoulder injury, and he will be undergoing surgery.
