Twenty eight year-old Panayiotou is accused of orchestrating the abduction and murder of his school teacher wife Jayde, whose body was found near Kwanobuhle, Uitenhage in late April, the day after she was reporting missing.

Panayiotou has been languishing in St Albans Prison for nearly a month and he will remain there for the foreseeable future.

Family members of the murder victim Jayde Panayiotou stood up in court with their hands raised high in jubilation when Magistrate Beeton said bail was denied.

She said the accused failed to show exceptional circumstances existed for him to be granted bail. She said she had considered the totality of all the evidence placed before her, the arguments by both the State and Defence as well as extensive case law.

She postponed the matter to the 12th of June when she will provide full reasons for her decision.

Speaking moments after Magistrate Beeton denied Panayiotou bail, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Tsepo Ndwalaza expressed the NPA’s satisfaction with her decision.

“We have always been saying that we have concerns that the accused is given bail. Now that he has been denied bail we are very happy and justice can prevail. We are going full steam ahead” he said.
