4 700 poached perlemoen found in Cape Town

The South Afrrican Police made a significant perlemeon (abalone) bust in Cape Town yesterday.

Following a crime intelligence investigation into alleged illegal abalone activity; a search operation was conducted at a residence in Table View.

The Police swooped on a premises in Study Street where they uncovered an illegal abalone processing facility.

Numerous items of equipment, including large stainless steel cooking pots, gas cylinders and burners, scales, fans, plastic containers and shelves were seized.

Officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries were summoned to the scene, who counted the abalone.

It amounted to 4 757 units of shucked abalone.

The value thereof was estimated at approximately R 500 000-00.

A 46-year-old man was arrested and is to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court.
