One of the highlights of the JBay December holiday programme, the Marina Mile, presented by Nicholas Melck, will be held on 20 December.
The Marina Mile started way back in 1993 and was the forerunner to the other swim events that are held at Marina Martinique nowadays.
Event sponsor Nicholas Melck said he is stoked to be involved with the Marina Mile.
“It’s hard to believe that the first Marina Mile was held in 1993 and the event is still going strong today,” said Melck, who was one of the boatmen at the first Mile.
“Louis Stevenson and Brenton Williams were involved with hosting the inaugural Marina Mile and over the years, Brenton has taken open water swimming to a whole new level and put Jeffreys Bay on the map, both nationally and internationally,” added Melck.
The 2014 edition of the Marina Mile will see a double Mile take place, followed by the 500m and the bank to bank swims.
The Mile will then follow at 11:30 am.
The following day, a new event will take place – namely the Marina Dash for Cash.
“The Dash for Cash will be a unique open water swim that will be just 100m in distance, but to win the R 1 000 on offer, swimmers will have to swim heat after heat, with little rest inbetween until we have a winner,” said event organiser Brenton Williams.
Entries will open shortly for the Marina Mile on www.swimmingplus.com
Open water swim training takes place at 5:45 pm every Tuesday and Thursday evening at Marina Martinique.
Learn to swim and squad training takes place at Edge Fitness Club.
