The De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp has been awarded the SA Champion Port Trophy, for a vintage port at the 2014 SA Young Wine Show.
The awards ceremony took place in Cape Town on 22 August.
A total of 1 972 wines from the 2014 vintage competed side by side, with only 17 wines earning the title of champion wine.
De Krans’ winning vintage port is produced from Touriga Nacional grapes and will undergo further barrel maturation before it is bottled early in 2016.
“2014 was a challenging year with lots of rain in the summer,” commented De Krans winemaker Louis van der Riet.
“Slow ripening allowed for beautiful aromas of violets and chocolate with a firm tannin structure, which will result in a port with excellent ageing potential, added van der Riet.
This is the second time in three years that De Krans has been named at the SA Champion Port, after being awarded this title in 2012 as well.
The De Krans Tawny Port and Vintage Port were named Class Winners, respectively, at the same event.
De Krans Wine Cellar is situated along the upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka River Valley near Calitzdorp.
The history of the farm dates back to 1890, when it was bought by the Nel family.
Since 1985, most of the classic Portuguese port and wine varieties have been planted.
De Krans is widely known as one of the leading port producers in South Africa.
