The inaugural Sokkie Jol was held in Jeffreys Bay during the JBay Winter Fest 2013 and was one of the most popular events of the festival.
Skaters displayed spectacular downhill longboarding to the masses of people who were fortunate enough to witness this one of a kind skate event in South Africa.
The Sokkie Jol is loosely based on an already successful international longboard event known as The Downhill Disco.
Instead of just having a straight forward downhill for skaters to race and free ride down, they decided to add some obstacles such as ramps, banks and rollers. This was done to add some technical challenges to the longboarding discipline.
The 2013 Sokkie Jol event boasted a high number of participants as well as spectators, who came from all around the country.
The spectators swarmed the usually quiet street in the middle of Jeffreys Bay to watch the action.
They witnessed high speed riding, big airs and even bigger crashes. There was also fun activities for spectators to get involved in such as, best disco dress up, dance offs, product give aways, live DJ’s and much more.
The participants were given the opportunity to win some of the best prizes ever seen at a longboard event in SA.
“The 2014 Sokkie Jol promises to be an even more exiting display of gravity induced fun. We scaled down on our hill but the ramps will be bigger and better than the 2013 event. We look forward to seeing you all out on the hill in support of this unique and thrilling performance, said organiser Koffie Jacobs.
