“Our duty crew were preparing for normal Sunday routine exercises and routine base maintenance when an angler frantically approached them for help just after 5 am yesterday morning,” said Clint Abrahams of the NSRI.

“He said that his friend and fellow angler, a local man believed to be aged in his early 40’s, had been shot on Strandfontein Beach by apparent robbers.

The NSRI found the man lying unconscious on the beach about 400 m, from the NSRI station and discovered he had a gunshot wound to his chest.

“Our medics initiated medical treatment and the man was brought to our sea rescue station secured to a trauma board where we were met by EMS paramedics and the Police, added Abrahams.

The Police cordoned off the area and have opened a murder docket.

It appears that the two anglers had gone early morning fishing at Strandfontein Beach when they were attacked by an unknown number of men and one of the fishermen had managed to flee to the sea rescue base to get help after his fellow angler had been shot.
