This is great news for the Kouga as it means we will have representation at the highest levels of Government and is just reward for the voters of Kouga, the majority of whom voted for the DA in the recent election.

The DA won thirteen of the fifty four permanent seats in the NCOP as Members of Parliament.

The seats of each province are based on the provincial votes cast during the last election by each political party. The Western Cape has four DA Members of Parliament (MPs) in the NCOP, Gauteng will have two MPs, and each of the other seven provinces will each have one MP to this House of Parliament.

In the National Assembly where there are 400 seats, the DA’s number of MPs increased from 67 in 2009 to 89 in 2014. There are nine MPs from the Eastern Cape in the NA as opposed to six previously.

In the Eastern Cape the DA Members of the Provincial Legislature also increased from six to ten. The DA is now the Official Opposition in the Eastern Cape with Athol Trollip as the Leader.

Van Lingen has been the DA Leader in the NCOP since 2011 and the DA Constituency Leader for the Tsitsi-Karoo (Baviaans, Kouga and Koukamma) since 2009.

Her re-election to Parliament has tremendous advantages for the region where local issues can be directly elevated to the provincial legislature and national parliament.

The excellent growth in the DA in this constituency and in the Eastern Cape contributed to securing this very important position for the DA.

Her election as MP is furthermore a just reward for the runaway victory for the DA in Kouga Municipality – her home turf.
