A spate of house breakings was reported in Die Burger with the thieves gaining access through sliding doors and robbing homes while the residents were fast asleep.

Nesta Terblanche told Die Burger that a laptop was stolen from next to her bed, while her and her husband were sleeping.

“We were asleep and did not hear a thing. We have now ordered a new alarm system as we are now living in fear,” said Terblanche.

Another local resident reported that her brother and his family who are visting Jeffreys Bay from Singapore, were robbed at a guest house on 14 March. Again, cell phones, laptops, ipads and wallets were stolen and access was also gained through a sliding door.

Up to date crime stats are not allowed to be released by the Jeffreys Bay Police, making it even more difficult for residents to defend themselves against criminals.

The “latest crime stats” are for the period April 2012 – March 2013 and reveal that there were 401 reported burglaries at residential premises during that time period.
