The World Tourism Organisation (WTO) defines tourists as people ‘’travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes.’’

Business tourism is a sub sector of tourism and is one of the leading industry contributors, making up 10% of all travel.

Major events are also expected to inject huge amounts of money into the South African economy.

South African Tourism CEO Thulani Nzima says that 88 secured bids for major events between 2013 and 2017 ‘will generate upwards of R 2.6bn into our economy’.

“The results that we are registering now are quite impressive, but we are just at the beginning of the process.”

Mr Nzima says South Africa has the hotel and facilities capacity to host far more events. South Africa got ‘a shot in the arm’ in 2010 with a number of hotel and bed and breakfast investments ahead of the World Cup.

The JBay Winter Fest is expected to inject well over R 20 million into the Eastern Cape economy, with the flag ship event of the Winter Fest being the JBay Open of Surfing which has replaced the now defunct Billabong Pro.

All the world’s top surfers as well as many international TV crews will descend upon Jeffreys Bay in July, as well as thousands of spectators who will come to watch the only World Championship Tour (WCT) event on the African Continent.

The Winter Fest takes place in Jeffreys Bay from 10 – 20 July and offers a multi sports festival during winter in the surf mecca of South Africa.

Organiser Koffies Jacobs says that with sports like the JBay Mountain Bike Open, VW Rally, Flamingo Trial Run, Downhill and Sokkie Jol skate events and an extreme swim in 12C water, there is plenty on offer to keep families entertained in Jbay during July.
