Steps are yet to be taken against more than 1 000 government employees almost a decade after they were implicated in scamming housing subsidies from the government by misrepresenting their personal particulars.
A total of 1 484 government employees in the Eastern Cape were involved in the decade-long scam, between 1994 and 2004.
At the time the Housing Subsidy System did not pick up the “misrepresentation” because it was not interfaced with the Persal System.
An investigation was done by the Special Investigation Unit on instruction of the State President in 2007, following findings by the Auditor-General for the 2005/06 financial year for the National Department of Human Settlements.
To date there is no final report quantifying the amount involved in the corruption nor have any steps been taken against officials, despite criminal charges being laid.
“It is time that the ordinary citizens of the country stand up and make their vote count for change.
A DA-led government is committed to a corruption-free system where accountability and responsible management will bring about a open society for all, not the current close crony society reserved for some” said Dacre Haddon from the Democratic Alliance in Bhisho.
