A huge run away fire broke out yesterday afternoon on the empty area next to the Jeffreys Bay golf course.
Houses in the Dogwood and Mytle streets part of Wavecrest were threatened by the flames which were fanned by gale force winds.
Fortunately the houses in Broom street, which were also in the path of the fire, suffered no permanent damage and the fire was finally brought under control by the Kouga Fire Department.
They were ably assisted by the Jeffreys Bay Police.
Several residents were critical of the municipality who had been requested as far back as August 2012 to provide an adequate firebreak without any success.
“There is still no response from the municipality to the problem with all the overgrown plots in Jeffreys Bay which also present a fire risk” reported DA Councillor Dave Aldendorff.
Strong winds, gusting up to 60 km per hour plus intermittent rain is expected in Jeffreys Bay today.
