The St Francis MTB Challenge has been postponed to 20 January 2013. All the routes are still under water, and with only three weeks to go, not making a decision now was looking for trouble.
“I believe in safety first. Even if we make changes to the race routes, we will not be able to access all areas with emergency vehicles should that be necessary, and it is just not worth the risk,” race director and organizer Eric Stewart said.
“In my 16 years of mountain biking in this area, I have never seen so much water,” says Stewart. “However, we now know where the biggest problem areas are and what to avoid in future.”
The new date for the event is 18 – 20 January, the first weekend of the new school term. “It is the first CSA event of the year, and two weeks before the Herald, so cyclists will use our event in their training.”
The program for the weekend will stay the same, with the Balobi Team Day Ride and individual Night Ride on Friday, the Port Hole Kids Fun MTB Ride on Saturday morning and the main 15km, 35km and 80km distances on Sunday from the St Francis Links. Online entries remain open on St Francis Sport .
The event is organised by St Francis Sport Events, and the main sponsors are Balobi Processors, The Port Hole Building and Village Video, as well as St Francis Service Station, Midas Earthcote, Moore Stephenson, St Francis Links and African Overalls.
All sponsors and pre-entrants have already been informed of the new date. For more information, contact Eric Stewart on 082 394 7363.
