Durban Lifeguard missing – presumed drowned

The  NSRI Durban volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated on Saturday afternoon, following reports of a lifeguard missing at Addington Beach.

It was reported that an experienced Addington Beach Surf lifeguard, a male 22 years old, from Durban, with over 4 years experience, had been paddling off shore with 4 other lifeguards on rescue ski’s, during routine training, when at 16h10 the rescue ski capsized and the lifeguard has not been seen since.

When a search by fellow lifeguards revealed no sign of the missing lifeguard, the NSRI Durban and Police Search and Rescue were notified.

The NSRI launched the sea rescue craft Eikos Rescuer II  and an NSRI rescue vehicle, while a Transnet National Ports Authority rescue helicopter and a Police Search and Rescue unitalso  responded.

On arrival on-scene the NSRI, the rescue helicopter and the Police joined lifeguards who were searching for their fellow member but despite an extensive search, which lasted until after dark, no sign of the missing lifeguard has been found.
