A lingering south swell provided tricky and at times difficult conditions for the men and women at the US Open of Surfing yesterday.
Among those to advance into the next round were World Tour standouts Alejo Muniz (BRA), John John Florence (HAW), Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Julian Wilson (AUS) — who recorded the current highest single-wave score of the event with a massive frontside air reverse.
Standouts, Miguel Pupo (BRA) and Dane Reynolds (USA) kept their hot streak going in the challenging surf with two of the best airs of the event, earning scores just below the bar that Julian Wilson set earlier in the Round of 96. Both Pupo and Reynolds, along with other top names like Kelly Slater (USA), Yadin Nicol (AUS) and Kai Otton (AUS), have secured a spot in Thursday’s Round of 24.
Slater totally dominated his heat, posting a score of 16.03 to advance to the next round in the US Open of Surfing.
