Put jobs before name changes in the Eastern Cape

The Democratic Alliance  is committed to reconciliation and redress. This means rectifying the wrongs of the past, and having an inclusive approach to the culture and heritage of all people.

Is a name change for Jeffreys Bay looming?

The Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee will soon be embarking on public hearings across the province. It is very important that we all participate in these hearings to ensure this is a widely consultative process.

The name change process is a legal one and the prescripts must be followed. Yes, the offensive and incorrect names should be rectified, but let us use our scarce resources to address the needs of our communities.

Changing names is not one of the priorities for service delivery in the Eastern Cape, and will not assist in job creation, building of houses, fighting crime and other needs of our community.

Please attend the public hearings and carry the message to the committee that the first name that should change is that of unemployment, to employment.
