In June 2009, Mrs Lydia Smith was attacked in her son’s home in Paradise Beach. The Police, with the assistance of the local Neighbourhood Watch arrested five suspects after a joint operation.
Two of the suspects, Luvuyo Jack and Sithembile Sopile (both 22 years old) were sentenced to nine years imprisonment in the Humansdorp Regional court for Housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery.

The case was withdrawn against one suspect for turning State witness and against two suspects for lack of evidence.
The Community Police Forum said that Cst Monwabisi Matthew Peter, the investigating officer in the robbery case did a fine job in ensuring long term sentences for the house robbers and that it sent a strong message to criminals who invade homes in the town.
