A well known local resident was attacked in Da Gama Road in the early hours of Saturday morning and was stabbed numerous times while trying to defend himself.
The man was walking home towards Wavecrest after a night out on the town, when the attack took place near the Moth memorial.
A desperate fight broke out that saw a number of potentially serious stab wounds being sustained by the victim.
The Community Police Forum (CPF) has issued a warning that residents and visitors should be aware of their surroundings when walking in the town late at night and should avoid walking alone.
The assailant has been described as a tall Coloured man with longish hair and was armed with a knife.
