New Directors for J’Bay Tourism

Nearly 40 people attended the AGM of Jeffreys Bay Tourism held at the Ski Boat Club last night.
The outgoing Chairman of J”Bay Tourism, Mr. Mongezi Vika said that is the Tourism office’s responsibility to promote the town as a place where visitors feel welcome and to ensure that the benefits of tourism were understood and extended throughout the greater community.
“The international tourism industry has been hard hit by the global recession and there has been a considerable decline in the number of overseas tourists visiting South Africa”, said Vika.
“This decline is most noticeable amongst our traditional European markets which are very important to Jeffreys Bay”, he added.
The alarming lack of support from the local municipality for tourism is evident with a grant of only R 36 000 per annum being received by the office for managing and marketing tourism for Jeffreys Bay.
This has hampered efforts by J’Bay Tourism to do anything meaningful to promote the town and is one of the challenges facing the new board of Directors.

Andy Thuysman, Tyron Van Tonder and Brenton Williams have all been voted back onto the board after an absence of several years. Thysman was the Chairman of Tourism for a number of years and his appointment has been welcomed by the members of the Association.
Anita Meijberg and Sharon Versveld are the two remaining Directors to be re-elected and they are joined by John Bouwer, Petra Els, Sally Waterworth and Yolanda Du Plessis. The new Board will meet shortly to elect a Chairman and work out portfolios for the Directors.
