Splash Time for Steers Marina Mile

Entries are pouring in for the 2010 Steers Kouga Express Marina Mile which will be held at Marina Martinique on 23 December. The popular event is growing in stature and around 400 swimmers are expected to take part in the various races on offer.

An extreme swim of 25 km will get the ball rolling on 22 December when the two confirmed entrants, Gerhard Stiglmayr and local swim coach Brenton Williams will enter the water at 8 am and attempt a swim that is truly extreme in every sense.

“This year we are aiming at establishing a 25 km swim in the Eastern Cape as this event has never been held here before”, said Brenton Williams, the convenor of the Steers Marina Mile

“Marina Martinique has proved to be one of the best venues in South Africa, if not the world to host events up to 10 km and now we want to show that a genuine marathon swim can also be held here” he added.

A 25 km swim is equated to a 100 km run but this is where the similarity ends. During a run, athletes still has full use of the senses like smell, sight, hearing and being able to talk and interact with people around them. A swimmers world is narrowed down to limited sight and hearing and the mind has to be strong to complete a long distance swim of this nature.

At 2 pm the 10 km swim will take place which is also a first for the Marina Mile. “We fully support the Kouga Swim Club’s initiative to hold an Open Water Swim Festival in Jeffreys Bay says event organiser Mike Zoetmulder from Zports. “We realise that there will be limited entries for a 25 km swim but that the potential for growth is vast for a fledgling sport like open water swimming”.

The action will start early on 23 December when another new event, the Double Mile will take place at 8.30 am. This will be followed by the Bank to Bank swim which caters for kids 10 years and under. Parental assistance is allowed in this event.

The 500 m swim will take place at 10.30 am followed by the Women’s Mile at 11.00 am and the Men’s Mile at 12.00 pm.
