Jordy Smith set the world alight when he won the Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay and became the first South African surfer since Shaun Tomson to lead the World Surf Ranking. There is another South African that is leading world rankings and he is Chad Ho, the open water swimmer from Durban.
Ho is now ranked number one in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup. Halfway through the series ,Chad is sitting with a 26 point lead over his nearest rivals.
The 10 K swim became an Olympic sport in 2008 where Chad managed a respectable 7th position. In the 2009 season Chad finished 23rd overall as he could not make all the events needed to have a run at the World title.
Ho opened up this season with two second place finishes in events in South America. Chad was pipped at the post in both events but he had laid down his challenge that 2010 was going to his year.
A 4th place finish followed in Portugal and with a 3rd in Canada, Ho has proved to be the most consistent swimmer in the World Cup and it is only a matter of time before he wins gold. With 4 events remaining, Ho needs to stay fit and focused and South Africa will have yet another swim World Champion in our midst.
The first event of the EP Open Water Swim Series, hosted by Kouga Swim Club will take place at Marina Martinique on 3rd October. A 5K, 3K and 1K, together with the 500m and bank to bank swims will all take place at LaCaribe flats in Phase 2 of the Marina. More information can be found at EC Swim
