There is a trend developing in South Africa of people being followed to a bank or from a bank and then being robbed of their cash according to the South African Banking Risk Centre.
SABRIC CEO, Mrs Kalyani Pillay, explains, “We have been observing a disturbing rise in the trend of people being robbed either en route to the banks to make cash deposits, or after making withdrawals.
According to SABRIC, reported incidents of the robberies that are linked to the usage of banking systems have increased by 36% year to date, while there was a 55% increase between 2008 and 2009.

The trend analysis of reported cases that have been forwarded to SABRIC illustrate that while robberies of this nature occur nationally, metropolitan areas of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town are hugely affected.
“The reality is that anyone that is carrying large amounts of cash is a potential target of these criminals. Clients are urged to really eliminate any behavioral patterns that may expose them to falling victim to this kind of crime”.
