Sexual Crime on the increase in J’Bay

Both women and children are bearing the brunt of increased sexual attacks in the once peaceful seaside village of Jeffreys Bay. This was revealed at a meeting of the Community Police Forum (CPF) in the town last night.

The reasons behind the increase are not yet known but often socio economic factors play a role. High unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse as well as a culture where women’s rights are not properly respected can be the root causes of the problem.

Rape, molestation and certain legal definitions of domestic violence all fall within the term sexual crimes. Jeffreys Bay has a functional Trauma Center that helps the victims of abuse to cope with the situation.

Marina Martinique, Aston Bay & Paradise Beach remain the safest places to live in Jeffreys Bay.

House breakings remain a problem in Jeffreys Bay, with Wavecrest and Ocean View the worst hit suburbs. Aston Bay and Paradise Beach are still the safest suburbs to reside in, as minimal crime was reported from those areas. The strong Neighbourhood Watches and community involvment play a huge role in keeping criminals at bay in these suburbs.

The theft of motor vehicles is also a concern in Jeffreys Bay with mainly older model bakkies being targeted. It is believed that out of town syndicates are responsible for these crimes. The Police are working on several leads in theses cases.

Residents again raised their dissatisfaction with the Police not answering their telephones. The CPF has requested that the public make a note of the time and date of unanswered calls and these details can be emailed through to Sue Smit, the secretary of the CPF at [email protected]
