2010 Billabong Pro off to a flying start in J’Bay

Blue skies and idyllic surf ensured that Round one of the 2010 Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay saw some sensational performances in particular from Mick Fanning the reigning ASP World Champion and two-time winner of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay who scored the highest heat total of the event.

“The conditions changed a bit in our heat,” Fanning said. “We were all hunting for the barrel because a lot of the previous heats had them, but they didn’t pan out for us. After I readjusted to the conditions, I was really focusing on my turns and if a barrel presented itself, I would go from there.”

Currently ranked No. 4 in the hunt for the 2010 ASP World Title, Fanning is confident in his ability at Jeffreys Bay and looks to ignite a similar form that saw him steam to world No. 1 in 2009.

South African Jordy Smith is crowd favourite and currently ranked second in the world, won his heat with a 16.37 out of a possible 20 with an effortless display of forehand power gouges and beautiful tube-riding that had the vuvuzela’s blowing on the beach.

“I think the only kind of pressure that exists is that which I put on myself,” Smith said. “This is where I love to be and getting to surf firing Jeffreys with only two other guys out is an incredible experience.”

Kelly Slater won his heat in style, pulling off a 360 at Supertubes in the process. Slater paddled out late after his board hadn’t arrived in time but he kept his calm and got the job done in a manner that showed he wants to win the Billabong Pro for a 5th time.

Right after Slater’s heat, a minutes silence was held in memory of Jackson Pennington from the Supertubes Surfing Foundation, who had passed away in late 2009.

Surfline, official forecasters for the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, are calling for a slight decline in surf tomorrow before another pulse fills in on Saturday.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions for a possible 7:30am start.
