Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, one of the largest wind farms in South Africa, has started transporting wind turbines along the N2 from the Port of Ngqura to the wind farm site near Humansdorp.
Pictures of some of the turbines were taken by Ubuntu Bricks.
The route used to transport the turbines is as follows: From Motherwell, along the R334, past Despatch and Uitenhague joining the N2 at the Blue Horizon Bay Exit and travel along the N2 to Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp).
Transportation will take place between 22 July 2013 and 31 January 2014.
Transportation trucks and trailers, some up to 50m in length will transport wind turbine components along the N2.
The majority of the route is along dual carriageway allowing traffic to overtake the turbine transportation vehicles, with the exception of the single lane (with intermittent passing lanes) between Thornhill and Jeffreys Bay.
All loads will travel as single consignments, except through Port Elizabeth where there will be a police escort for the larger components.
Regular deliveries throughout the day from Monday to Friday with no deliveries on weekends, public holidays or at night (prior notice will be given of any exceptions made for weekend deliveries).
The N2 highway has been modified to accommodate the large turning radius of the abnormal load
