Areas of Tshwane have been brought to a standstill by violent protesters who are against the appointment of Thoko Didiza as mayoral candidate for the city.
Numerous buses have been burnt, while foreign owned shops are also now being looted.
Protesters are demanding that incumbent Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa be retained by the ANC.
The following areas in Tshwane have been affected:
Attridgeville, Hammanskraal, Soshanguve, Mamelodi.
Residents have reported that heavily armed police have entered the area in an effort to restore calm.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba said a messenger had been assaulted in Mamelodi and a municipal car had been stripped.
“We have withdrawn teams on standby. If there’s a service interruption, we won’t be able to respond in order to safeguard the lives of our personnel and assets.”
