UDM councillor Mandla Faltein won Wednesday’s by election in a ward that was held previously by the ANC and became vacant following the death of ANC councillor, Mike Tofile.

According to the Independent Electoral Commission, Faltein won the ward with 49.9 percent of the vote, where the poll in the ward was just over 40 percent.

DA Eastern Cape leader, Atholl Trollip, said “the ANC had polled 75 percent of the vote in Ward 30 in 2014 but had dropped to 41 percent, while the DA support in the ward had jumped from a mere two percent in 2011 to nine percent in 2015.”

He added that the DA growth in yesterday’s  by election coupled with the UDM victory means that the ANC hegemony has been shattered in a former ANC stronghold ward.
