The exciting Summer Triathlon Series kicks off on Thursday morning with the first race of this three part Series taking place at Hobie Beach in Port Elizabeth. The Summer Series, which has fast become one of the most popular triathlon events on the Eastern Province calendar, will see the region’s top triathletes taking part in final preparation for the Ironman 70.3 which takes place in January. Over 200 individuals and teams are expected to descend on Hobie Beach for round one.

The Summer Series Triathlon is a sprint distance event open to both teams (of 3) and individuals as the event comprises a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. Also on offer at the Series will be an aquathlon which is a run, swim, run over a 1km, 100m, and 1km distance mainly aimed at the kids but this season open to all.

The 2010 Summer Series is being keenly supported by Triangle Sports, Atlas Security, Quali Juice and Tavcor Commercial Vehicles with Sports Splits South Africa providing state-of-the-art electronic timing.

The Kouga Swim Club is happy to announce that Round 2 will be taking place on Wednesday 22nd at Marina Martinique, Jeffreys Bay while Round 3 will conclude the Series at Port St Francis on Sunday 26th.

“2010 has seen the Steers Marina Mile grow into an Open Water Swim Festival and we are stoked to bring the Summer Series Triathlon on board as well”, said Brenton Williams, the convener of the Festival.

“The Marina was well known as an excellent venue for triathlons in the 1990’s and we are hoping to have at least one triathlon a season in the future. The 2010 Steers Marina Mile will see the introduction of a 25 km extreme swim, which will also take place on 22 December.

Ironman stars Raynard Tissink and James Cunnama will be expected to make an appearance and will prove very hard to beat even over this short distance. Winners are expected to complete the course in just under an hour with the Hobie Beach event starting at 8.30am and rounds 2 and 3 at 9.30am

Online registration for teams and individuals is highly recommended with the first 200 registrants each getting a free Series t-shirt. The Series website and a late registration fee will apply to all entries received on the morning of the races and late entries may be restricted to only 50 participants at each round. Online registration includes your race entry fee for your first race, irrespective of which race this is for, so you are encouraged to get this registration in soonest.
