The United States Government has warned that is has received information that terrorist groups are planning to carry out near-term attacks against places where U.S. citizens congregate in South Africa, such as upscale shopping areas and malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
This information comes against the backdrop of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s public call for its adherents to carry out terrorist attacks globally during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
The South African Police have not responded to the advisory.
Following a similar warning in 2009, the US closed its embassy and consulates in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town for several days.
The Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille said national security agents are investigating the matter, adding that the warnings have been ‘very concerning’.
“We must always take a warning at this level, which is a high alert, very seriously.
The US has strong intelligence and they’ve passed that intelligence onto the South African authorities and I don’t think we should ignore something like this.”
