Thornhill police rushed to Van Stadens Bridge after a woman was spotted on a closed circuit camera sitting next to a Lifeline sign board early yesterday morning.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, says the woman, in her forties, is from Port Elizabeth.
She says a female police officer spoke to her and she was then taken to the Thornhill police station.
Swart says she will be receiving counselling. She says the woman did not make an attempt to jump.
The Van Stadens Bridge has been secured by fence which was put up by the organisation, Friends of Van Stadens Trust, which was established to offer assistance to people and to help reduce the number of suicides at the Bridge.
Swart says Thursday’s incident was the 9th time that police rushed to the aid of a person on the bridge, since the fence was erected on the sides of the bridge in December.
