A large Great White Shark was spotted just off the beach shortly after the attack.

At a press conference at Clarkes beach, Tweed-Byron Inspector Bobbie Cullen said that at approximately 10:45am, police were called after a man was dragged from the water with severe injuries to his right leg.

“He was a Byron Bay local on his own swimming, and his wife was on beach at the time of the attack,” said Cullen.

“Bystanders spotted the man in the water, and dragged him to the beach. It is understood that part of the man’s leg was missing, and was found floating in the surf,” he added.

It is reported that the victim is 50 yr old Paul Wilcox.

Beaches in Byron Bay have been closed for 24 hours as a precaution.
