One of the premier events on the JBay December holiday programme, the Marina Mile will take place on 13 December in the salt water canals of Marina Martinique.
There are plenty of events on offer this year, with the Double Mile kicking off the day.
This will be followed by a 500 m swim aimed at swimmers who are not quite comfortable with swimming a Mile but still want to enter the day’s festivities.
The main event, the Marina Mile will be preceded by a bank to bank swim, which is a 40 m swim for U/10 swimmers who are new to open water.
The Marina Mile, which first took place back in 1994, is one of the most popular open water swim events in South Africa and has been won by the like of Sprinbok swimmers Tyron Venter and Velia Janse Van Rensburg.
Jessica Roux, who represented South Africa in the 10 K event at the 2012 Olympic Games, is also a multiple winner of the Marina Mile.
The Marina Mile is a highly spectator friendly event, with swimmers easy to spot from the banks of the canals and safe for swimmers as well as there are no currents, tides or wildlife to worry about.
This year will see the second edition of the Dash for Cash, which is an event that tests the fitness and endurance of swimmers, while also forcing swimmers to use tactical awareness if they want to win.
A number of 100 m heats are swam, with swimmers falling out every heat, until there are only two swimmers left in the dash for cash.
There is very little rest inbetween heats, so swimmers have to pace themselves, without being knocked out in the early rounds.
Entries can be done online at www.swimmingplus.com and late entries will be accepted on the day.
Training sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:45 pm and visiting swimmers are welcome to join.
The JBay Open Water Swim Club meets at the Marina Wharf restaurant at Marina Martinique.
