Three police officers were busy charging two suspects at Pinetown police station in the early hours of Friday morning when one of the suspects disarmed a police officer and shot the three police officers as well as a second suspect.
Warrant Officer Norman John (44) died instantly and the other two officers were wounded and taken to hospital for treatment.
The second suspect, who was arrested for drugs, was also wounded during the shooting and later died in hospital.
The suspect (33) who shot the victims was also shot and killed at the scene.
Two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder were opened at Pinetown police station for further investigation.
An inquest docket was also opened for the killing of the suspect who shot the police officers.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni extended her condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Warrant Officer John who died in the line of duty.
She also wished the two injured members who are still in hospital for the injuries they have sustained during the shooting, a speedy recovery.
“This attack on police officers and a civilian is unacceptable and it must be strongly condemned,” she said.
