Supertubes fires as winter approaches

There is a bite in the early morning breeze as the local surfers hit the beach before sunrise to paddle out into the stacked up lines that have appeared in the bay over the past few days.

The first of the winter swells have arrived and the timeless quality of the waves breaking along the shallow rocks that guard the coastline has once again proved why Jeffreys Bay is regarded as one of the best surf spots on the planet.

With the JBU Supertrial, presented by RVCA, entering its waiting period next week, last year’s winner Dylan Lighfoot has been blasting the freight train walls of Supertubes as he warms up for another crack at earning the wildcard into the JBay Open.

“The waves have been cooking and its been the perfect build up to the JBU Supertrial. I have been feeling in rhythm in the water and can’t wait for the Supertrial,” said Lightfoot.

Lighfoot has been joined at Supertubes by 13 year old Kai Woolf, who caught a few bombs in one of the tightest line ups in the world.

Another local JBU Supertrial surfer Remi Petersen has also been carving the canvas like walls of Supertubes and is in good form heading into next week’s showdown.

The JBU Supertrial has a waiting period 1 – 12 June and one day of surfing will determine which surfer will advance into the WSL JBay Open.

Based on what has been happening out at Supers over the past few days, don’t be surprised if one of the local boys once again blast away all opposition to earn the right to take on the world’s best surfers at one of the world’s best waves.

The JBU Supertrial will see 24 of South Africa’s top surfers battle it out to win the wildcard into the JBay Open of Surfing which takes place from 8 – 19 July in Jeffreys Bay.

The JBay Winterfest takes place over the same time period and there will be a host of different sporting events taking place in the town during the day, with live music to entertain visitors at night.
