With a water temperature of between 24 – 27 degrees C, light winds and lots of sun, swimmers had to contend with the risk of overheating in the salt water canals of Marina Martinique.

The Steers Double Mile kicked off JBay’s open water swim festival with rising star in open water swimming Amy Mardon taking first place. Local swimmer JC Van Wyk won the men’s division and Port Elizabeth youngster Josh Tucker won the junior division.

Kyle de lange and Chante Louw took the honours in the 500m swim, with local swimmer Noah de Swart (7 yrs) also completing the swim.

The women’s mile then hit the water with Amy Mardon doing the double and winning the race from up and coming local swimmer Michelle Strydom.

Melanie Gertenbach won the masters division and Yanah Gerber won the junior category.

Cecelia Belgraver was the only entrant in the extreme 25 KM swim and eventually finished in a time of 10 hours 44 minutes, a commendable effort.

Pete Turner won the 10 K men’s swim, with Tracy Gous swimming an intelligent race to win the women’s category from Rebecca Newman. Tracy was also the overall winner of the 10 K swim.
