Staff evacuated at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station

Three helicopters, 55 firefighters and 15 vehicles were battling a veld fire in Koeberg on Tuesday afternoon, the City of Cape Town said.

“We are going to stay throughout the night, into the early hours tomorrow as well,” Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne said.

There was currently no danger to any property. The fire had destroyed a 12km strip of vegetation along the R27 since noon, he said.

Priya Reddy, spokesman for the City of Cape Town, said “there was a veld fire near the administration building. As a precaution, they are evacuating the staff”.

There had been concerns about the fires under transmission lines, but these were extinguished and power supply was not affected.
