The South African Rugby Union has confirmed that there is a five-year plan to ensure that “players of colour comprise half of the Springbok team in 2019”.
However, the lack of diversity in our national rugby team is a reflection of the unequal opportunities facing so many of our people.
There are also serious deficiencies in identification and the proper development of talent in poor communities.
The mooted introduction of quotas in the Springboks will not resolve these fundamental problems.
Government and sporting bodies, such as SARU, would do well to focus their attention on bottom-up development in sports and not on cosmetic transformative mechanisms that will not yield meaningful change in the long term.
