The Jeffreys Bay Open Water Swim Festival kicks off tomorrow at Marina Martinique when four swimmers will attempt to complete a marathon swim of 25 km in the canals.

Tyron Venter the 25 km South African Champion and Springbok Open Water swimmer arrived in the town today and had a practice swim late this afternoon. He will be joined in the water by Rebecca Newman, Gerhard Stiglmayr and local swim coach Brenton Williams.

“I have wanted to swim at Marina Martinique ever since I saw an event that took place here on Supersport a few years ago and thought that it looked like an excellent place to swim”, said Venter. “This afternoon Brenton and I swam the course to get our bearings and I am blown away by how good the canals are for open water swims”.

Tyron is the current SA Champion and has represented South Africa in marathon swims around the world. “In Europe the 25 km swim is a well established event and I am stoked to see that Jeffreys Bay is hosting a swim of this nature”, said Venter. “South Africa needs more extreme swims to enable us to develop swimmers who can compete on the world stage over this distance”.

The swim starts at 8 am tomorrow and spectators are encouraged to come and support the swimmers who will be taking nearly all day to complete the swim. The Steers Marina Mile takes place on the 23 December, also at Marina Martinique.
