The South African Police foiled a cash in transit heist near Welkom yesterday and engaged the well armed gang when they started shooting at the Police.
Members of the elite Special Task Force foiled the cash in transit heist 20 km outside of Welkom in the Free State.
A gang of 18 suspects in five cars rammed a Bidvest Protea Coin vehicle, but before they could do any more harm, the police moved in.
The suspects fled in their vehicles in different directions, opening fire on SAPS members, who returned fire.
The Police arrested 13 (three of whom were wounded), four were fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire and one suspect escaped (although he is believed to be wounded).
All five vehicles were recovered as well as 4 pistols, 1 revolver, 3 R5 rifles and an AK47 rifle.
