A man in his 40’s was killed and his 38 year-old accomplice taken into custody after their bakkie – loaded with perlemoen – overturned on the N2 at the Mondplaas turn-off near Jeffreys Bay on Thursday.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei says Jeffreys Bay police were alerted to the accident and on arrival at the scene they found that one occupant of the bakkie was dead and the other slightly injured.
Seekoei says it appears that the accident was caused by a burst tyre.
He says police found 48 bags of abalone, with a street value of half a million rand on the bakkie.
Seekoei says the men had been travelling from Strand in the Western Cape in the direction of Port Elizabeth.
The injured suspect was treated at Humansdorp hospital before being transferred to the holding cells at the Jeffreys Bay police station.
Seekoei says he’ll appear in court soon on charges of culpable homicide and the illegal possession of perlemoen.
